Senior Instructional Designer
AJ Smith is a senior instructional designer in Vanguard’s corporate university, Vanguard University. While his formal title is “designer,” his role features consulting, leading, experimenting, motivating, collaborating and learning. Smith derives great satisfaction from enabling business goals and objectives through strategic partnerships with leaders, innovating aligned solutions to deliver optimal learning experiences and managing projects in a fast-paced, highly iterative Agile environment.
Smith has been helping others achieve what he calls their “light bulb moment” in a professional setting for more than 10 years. While his journey in L&D began informally as a coach, mentor and practitioner, he has been a formal member of the L&D community since he joined the corporate university in 2013. Since then, he has supported projects such as Vanguard’s largest technology-based transformation in its history, and a revolutionary virtual leadership development program geared toward high-potential people leader candidates.
Smith has his B.S. in management and marketing and his MBA from Arizona State University, where he serves as an ambassador for prospective students. He also holds his Senior Certified Professional (SCP) certification through the Society for Human Resource Management. In 2015, he was selected as a member of Elliott Masie’s 30 under 30 in learning and development.
