Senior Principal of Executive Development
Larry Hoffman leads executive development at Amazon.com. His team’s mission is to help Amazon re-invent management science. Amazon believes that we have reached a scale at which many companies begin to fail, calcified in bureaucracy or crippled by the loss of their sense of mission or insurgent mentality. If we are to succeed, we believe that we need to find new answers to the challenges of leading at scale.
Hoffman has been working with leaders and the groups they lead for more than 22 years. Helping leaders lead well and skillfully, at large scale, is his particular interest and passion. Having spent much of his career as an organization development consultant and executive coach, Hoffman has specialized in the design and implementation of organizationwide leadership development programs.
Before coming to Amazon in 2008, Hoffman managed custom-design, leadership development consulting firms. In these roles, leading teams of senior consultants, coaches and trainers, he worked with companies from high-tech, health care, aerospace, manufacturing, entertainment and education industries. Always fascinated by the puzzles of leadership and leadership education, Hoffman has a master’s in applied behavioral science, bachelor’s degrees in finance and management, and has received several quality and performance awards.
Outside of work, Hoffman is an avid scuba diver, with consuming interests (though mediocre skill) in woodworking, juggling and ballroom dancing. During his student days, (when neglecting his studies) he produced live-action murder mysteries, led groups on challenge-course-style adventure training and accumulated a bit of infamy for elaborate practical jokes. Now a mature and settled professional, Hoffman lives with his wife and son in Seattle, Washington.
